The Monster Project 2019

ENG. I am very happy because The Monster Project gave me the opportunity to be part of this year’s edition.  The Monster Project teaches children about the power of their own imagination and encourages them to pursue their creative potential collaborating with artists from all over the world. The children draw monsters, and then the artists recreate them in their own styles.

This illustration was a bit of a challenge 'cause I wanted to stay true to the original idea, but also really fun and easy to make an interpretation and my own version of this interesting monster, to imagine it’s personality, colors and textures. I hope you like both versions of the monster. You can see the other amazing artworks on The Monster Project website.

ESP.

Here’s a video of the exhibition. I love the children’s reaction to the artwork ♡

Unicorn witch: the book of healing plants

ENG. This piece is from a dream I had about a centauride who protected a book from the fire she emanated to keep the heat of the medicinal plants she grew in her body. The book contained all the information about these healing plants, a map of all the seas, and a special section on how to heal a heart through collecting poppy seeds and blue notes. The centauride was a witch, a unicorn, a beast and she had the wisdom and strength of a thousand women.

ESP.

Hermandad

ENG. I made this illustration for Soultik, a really cool and interesting mexican band influenced by afro music, soul and mayan-tojolabal philosophy. They released their first single called Hermandad from their album ¿Qué dice tu corazón? (What does your heart say?) a couple of days ago and this is the single cover artwork I made for them. The lyrics of the song is a beautiful poem by Octavio Paz.

ESP.

Bjork's Utopia

Illustration inspired by Björk’s new album Utopia and the amazing art around it: orchid mask by James T. Merry and bizarre makeup by Hungry. I just love everything about Björk’s work.

Utopia
Bird species never seen or heard before
The first flute carved from the first fauna
Utopia (It’s not)
Elsewhere
Let's purify
You assigned me to protect our lantern
To be intentional about the light
Utopia
It isn't elsewhere
It, it’s here
My instinct has been shouting at me for years
Saying let’s get out of here
Huge toxic tumor bulging underneath the ground here
Purify, purify, purify, purify toxicity

Black heart: I keep my freakish heart in a drawer that nobody can reach

“I have a million things to talk to you about. All I want in this world is you. I want to see you and talk. I want the two of us to begin everything from the beginning.”

Proceso creativo - Calakmul

Client: Editorial El Gran Escritor
Art:
Ale De la Torre
Design: Áurea Carmín Design Studio

ENG. At the beginning of the year I illustrated a story entitled Calakmul for El pequeño gran Escritor by Sebastián Priego Isunza, a ten year old kid. El pequeño gran Escritor is an independent publisher that makes children's books, written by children and illustrated by different artists / illustrators from around the world.

The work of  this publishing house is wonderful and I am glad that there is a group of people who are passionate about their work, but also allow the children to write their own stories. It is a way to inspire other children to read, to write, to appreciate art and an invitation to treasure the books.

Something interesting about the creative process of illustration is that sometimes ir can start one way and could end up being completely different, but in this case, I tried to stick as much as possible to the initial sketch. The illustration process is very extensive. In the image shown above, there are only four steps: a pencil sketch, a first approach to the composition and colors to use, a more complete illustration and the final piece.

Although there are many more steps, these four give a clear idea of he illustration evolution.

△  △  △  △  △

ESP.

Eye meme

ENG. This week I've seen eye memes from different artists. It is so cool how this thing is like a window that goes straight to the essence of each artist and I find it impressive how the phrase "The eyes are the window of the soul" makes sense.

That's why I wanted to do the experiment and when looking for eyes I realized that they really become an artist stamp, but I also found that I tend to do them in a certain way depending on the technique I'm using. I don't know if this has to do with the difference between media, if I have a long way to go to find my own style or if it is only a reflection of my multiple personality XD.

In any case it is super interesting to see all these eye memes everywhere, leading us to discover new artists/illustrators.

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

ESP.
