Celebrating Ramón López Velarde

Google invited me to illustrate a Doodle to celebrate
the Mexican poet Ramón López Velarde.

I was inspired by the writer's poems and his context, but tried to make an interpretation through nature of what life meant to him with all its nuances, its luminosity and its darkness. In this Doodle, I included elements mentioned in one of his most important poems La Suave Patria, like dahlias, which are the national flowers of Mexico, nopales, a mexican woodpecker and hummingbirds. The theme of love and women as his constant inspiration are also reflected in this doodle.

Here’s a bit of the process to make the illustration (sketches).

To honor the Mexican poet, Google presented this Doodle at the Complejo Cultural Los Pinos, where a conversatory was held with the brilliant poets Isabel Zapata, Clyo Mendoza and Karen Villeda, who spoke about the presence of women in poetry and highlighted the current role of women in Mexican poetry.

El 21 de Mayo, el azar me regaló una serie de eventos preciosos al lado de personas que van por la vida mostrando el corazón. Lo que comenzó como una celebración del arte, con los días se convirtió en un homenaje a la vida, al amor y a la memoria.

Soultik, una banda a la que amo y admiro muchísimo, con quienes he tenido oportunidad de trabajar, presentó su sencillo más reciente. El concierto fue en 28 Arte Colectivo, un lugar bellísimo que abre sus puertas a la creación y del que emerge todo tipo de manifestación artística hecha con el corazón. Ahí tuve el gran honor de hacer una intervención y exposición gestionadas por AURORA y Estoy Aquí , proyectos creados por dos mujeres maravillosas que, entre otras mil cosas, se dedican a la gestión, difusión y registro de arte urbano creado por mujeres en la Ciudad de México.

Comenzando la intervención, mi abue se puso grave y conforme pasaban los días el sentido de lo que pintaba se fue transformando, todo floreció, los colores de pronto me parecieron más brillantes. Sin poder estar con ella, le recordé cuánto la quería y no dejé de hablarle hasta la última pincelada. Mi Mami hermosa se fue ayer y aunque no pude estar con ella, le hice un mural en un lugar muy lindo en el que siempre hay música, tardes color ámbar y personas con el corazón abierto de par en par. El concierto estuvo hermoso y (como dijo Mookie) el cielo lloró conmigo. Mi manera de guardarla para siempre en mi recuerdo es este mural y un concierto anegado en amor.

”Spoke Art NSFW, a group exhibition featuring over 40 femme artists exploring sex and sexuality. This dynamic array of artists displays a complex spectrum of experiences from introspective and intimate to playful and defiant. 

Returning for its third iteration the exhibition explores and expands on what it means to be a sexual femme presenting person today. Including a wide variety of media such as painting, drawing, embroidery and ceramics, each artist presents facets of sexuality from the feminine viewpoint. The exhibition seeks to celebrate the ever shifting and multi-dimensional experience of each artist from soft sensuality to frank brashness.

Each piece delves into the complexity of femme sexuality, not as a definitive narrative, but as a larger conversation. Giving voice to artists across the spectrum of gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality, racial background and experiences, the exhibition explores how each artist relates to their own sexuality.”

ENG. This month I had the opportunity to make an illustration for the children's section of Km Cero magazine, a cultural magazine about Mexico City. For this edition I illustrated the legend of "La Planchada", one of the most famous legends of the city originated in the Juárez Hospital. This is the legend:

A kind ghost in Mexico City

They say that Eulalia sees some patients at night. She gives them their medicine, accompanies them gently and tells them her love story.

When she was young, she met a doctor with whom she fell in love, but a few days before marrying him, he married another woman. Heartbroken, Eulalia, the beautiful nurse with the always well-pressed uniform, fell ill to death.

Since then, she has been lovingly strolling through the corridors of the Juarez hospital and, when in the morning some of the patients ask for the kind young lady who helped them the night before, the doctors reply, “Oh, no! she was “La Planchada”, a nurse who died a century ago…”.

ESP. Este mes tuve la oportunidad de hacer una ilustración para la sección infantil de la revista Km Cero, una revista cultural acerca del Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México. Para esta edición ilustré la leyenda de “La Planchada”, una de las leyendas más famosas de la ciudad y cuyo origen es el Hospital Juárez. La leyenda dice así:

Dicen que Eulalia atiende por las noches a algunos pacientes. Les da sus medicinas, los acompaña con dulzura y les cuenta su historia de desamor.

Cuando joven, conoció un médico del cual se enamoró, pero, unos días antes de casarse con él, se enteró de que el muy pérfido se había ido a casar con otra mujer. Con el corazón roto, Eulalia, la enferemera hermosa del uniforme siempre bien planchado, cayó enferma hasta morir. 

Desde entonces, se pasea amorosamente por los pasillos del hospital Juárez y, cuando por la mañana alguno de los enfermos pregunta por la amable señorita que lo ayudó la noche anterior, le responden los médicos “¡Ah, no! A usted lo vino a visitar la Planchada, una enfermera que murió hace un siglo…”.

Julia Esquivel

Julia Esquivel was an academic at San Carlos University, Guatemala, the Seminario Biblico Latinoamericano in Costa Rica and the Bossey Ecumenical Institute in Switzerland.Her poetry was heavily influenced by the Theology of Liberation. Author of seven books including two collections of poetry Threatened with Resurrection (1982) and The Certainty of Spring (1993).

In 1994 she received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Bern for her poetry which the University noted "gave voice to the suffering of the Guatemalan people in her spiritual poetry." She died in Guatemala on the 19th July 2019.

Este es el cartel que ilustré para ellos; pronto estaré publicando el arte completo del disco y esperando con mucha alegría a que salga su disco.

Nostalgia

La luz del sol que se filtra entre las hojas de los árboles, el olor de un libro nuevo, los pinceles que he usado durante más de 15 años, la cámara fotográfica que me regaló mi abuelo, el aroma de las gardenias y las hojas del limonero, el calor de las fogatas, los colores deslavados, el sabor del agua de lima, un espirógrafo, la lluvia y el olor a tierra en una tarde de verano; la voz de mi madre cantando, su risa, sus abrazos, sus ojos y su bondad; los globos de cada domingo, el bosque y la sonrisa de mi padre, el tren del bajío en la noche y los rincones de la casa de mi abuela; recorrer la ciudad en la madrugada, bailar sin pensar en nada, llorar de alegría; enamorarme de las palabras, acostarnos para mirar las estrellas, sentir el calor de las mañanas de domingo, leer palabras hermosas, pasar un día completo en la cama, escuchar la canción que hace que todo se detenga.
