Proceso creativo - Calakmul

ENG. At the beginning of the year I illustrated a story entitled Calakmul for El pequeño gran Escritor by Sebastián Priego Isunza, a ten year old kid. El pequeño gran Escritor is an independent publisher that makes children's books, written by children and illustrated by different artists / illustrators from around the world.
The work of this publishing house is wonderful and I am glad that there is a group of people who are passionate about their work, but also allow the children to write their own stories. It is a way to inspire other children to read, to write, to appreciate art and an invitation to treasure the books.
Something interesting about the creative process of illustration is that sometimes ir can start one way and could end up being completely different, but in this case, I tried to stick as much as possible to the initial sketch. The illustration process is very extensive. In the image shown above, there are only four steps: a pencil sketch, a first approach to the composition and colors to use, a more complete illustration and the final piece.
Although there are many more steps, these four give a clear idea of he illustration evolution.

ESP. Uno de los trabajos que hice al inicio del año, fue ilustrar un cuento titulado Calakmul, de Sebastián Priego Isunza, uno de los niños que forma parte de la selección de la editorial El pequeño gran Escritor, que es una editorial independiente que hace libros para niños, escritos por niños e ilustrado por diferentes artistas/ilustradores del mundo.
La manera de trabajar de esta editorial es maravillosa y me da muchísimo gusto que exista un grupo de personas a las que les apasiona su trabajo, pero además permita a los niños escribir sus propias historias y con ellas realizar libros ilustrados dirigidos a otros niños. Es una manera de inspirar a otros pequeños a leer, a escribir, a apreciar la parte gráfico de la historia y los invite a atesorar los libros.
Algo interesante del proceso creativo es que muchas veces inicia de una manera y termina siendo completamente distinto, pero en este caso y por cuestiones de tiempo, traté de apegarme lo más que pude al boceto inicial. El proceso de ilustración es muy extenso y generalmente voy guardando versiones que me van gustando para las ilustraciones. En la imagen que se muestra a continuación, sólo hay cuatro pasos: el boceto con el que inicié, un primer acercamiento a la composición y colores a utilizar, una ilustración más completa y por último la final.
Aunque hay muchísimos pasos más, estos cuatro dan una clara idea de la evolución por la que atraviesa una ilustración.
La antología de cuentos ilustrados se presentará en la
Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara
el 28 de Noviembre en el foro FIL Niños.

Eye meme
ENG. This week I've seen eye memes from different artists. It is so cool how this thing is like a window that goes straight to the essence of each artist and I find it impressive how the phrase "The eyes are the window of the soul" makes sense.
That's why I wanted to do the experiment and when looking for eyes I realized that they really become an artist stamp, but I also found that I tend to do them in a certain way depending on the technique I'm using. I don't know if this has to do with the difference between media, if I have a long way to go to find my own style or if it is only a reflection of my multiple personality XD.
In any case it is super interesting to see all these eye memes everywhere, leading us to discover new artists/illustrators.

ESP. Estos días he estado viendo eye memes de diferentes artistas. Es súper padre cómo este experimento se vuelve una ventana que va directo a la esencia de cada uno de ellos y me parece impresionante cómo la frase "Los ojos son la ventana del alma" toma sentido.
Por eso quise hacer el ejercicio y al estar buscando ojos me di cuenta de que realmente se vuelven una especie de sello, pero también me encontré con que tiendo a hacerlos de cierta manera dependiendo de la técnica que esté usando. No se si esto es una muestra de lo diferentes que son las herramientas que usamos para crear, si me falta mucho para llegar a encontrar un estilo propio o si sólo es un reflejo de mi personalidad múltiple XD.
En todo caso es súper interesante ver todos estos eye memes, llevándonos a descubrir nuevos artistas e ilustradores.

ENG. I made this Illustration for Current Affairs magazine, for a very interesting article about how US drug war policies create violence across the border, and the links between drug addicts who die of overdoses in US cities and the people impacted by cartel violence in border cities in Mexico. A very interesting topic, which hopefully will raise awareness among US citizens about this violent exchange that not only affects those involved in this drug war, but innocent people in both countries.

Ilustración para un artículo de Current Affairs acerca de la violencia que se vive en México y EEUU debido a la guerra contra las drogas y al vínculo que existe entre las muertes por sobredosis en Estados Unidos y las muertes por la violencia que generan los cárteles en la frontera Mexicana. Un tema muy interesante, que con suerte logrará crear conciencia en ciudadanos norteamericanos acerca de este intercambio tan violento que no sólo afecta a los involucrados en esta guerra contra las drogas, sino a personas inocentes en ambos países.
Artery skein: My monster heart
ENG. For this piece (Artery skein: My monster heart) I started with a couple of sketches, one very general and one in which I worked lights and shadows, but I felt that something was missing in the illustration, so I worked on a lot of new sketches until I found the right one. When I start inking, I usually use different thicknesses of pens, but this time I used only one and liked how it turned out. For the color palette I was inspired by bugambilias, in all those beautiful magenta and cherry shades.

ESP. Este es una probadita del proceso creativo de Artery skein: My monster heart. Comencé con un par de bocetos, uno muy general y otro en el que trabajé luces y sombras, pero sentía que algo le faltaba a la ilustración, así que trabajé en varios bocetos más hasta que el dibujo salió tal como lo quería. Para la ilustración en tinta generalmente uso estilógrafos de diferentes grosores, pero esta vez usé sólo uno y me gustó mucho el resultado. Para la paleta de colores me inspiré en las bugambilias que llenan de color la ciudad, particularmente de esos colores guinda y magenta que tanto me gustan.

SYCAMORE REVIEW
ENG. A couple of years ago I was invited to participate in the literary journal Sycamore Review of the University of Perdue. They chose some of my illustrations for the texts and for the cover they chose Stardust I, the illustrated tribute I made to Sudan. A few days ago I came across these images.

ESP. Hace un par de años me invitaron a participar en la publicación literaria Sycamore Review de la Universidad de Perdue. Ellos eligieron algunas de mis ilustraciones para acompañar los textos y para la portada eligieron Stardust I, el tributo ilustrado que le hice a Sudán. Hace unos días me encontré con estas imágenes.
Stardust series
Sudán 1973-2018
A través de los años distintas especies animales se han extinguido y, cualquiera que sea la causa, es triste saber que esas especies jamás se volverán a ver viviendo en este planeta.
Ayer murió Sudán, el último ejemplar macho de rinoceronte blanco del norte, llevándose toda esperanza de que su especie siga viva, pues sólo quedan dos hembras. Su salud se había deteriorado debido a su edad, pero las últimas horas empeoró, y el rinoceronte que había logrado sobrevivir tantos años a los cazadores, finalmente murió. Sudán era especial, pues además de ser un ejemplar bellísimo y muy noble, su condición sirvió para alertar al mundo acerca de la situación que enfrentan muchas otras especies ante la amenazadora actividad humana. Con su muerte presenciamos de manera directa el fin de una especie animal.
Los rinocerontes son mis animales favoritos y durante varios años seguí la vida de Sudán. Esta es una ilustración que hice de él y su hija Najin hace algunos años.
